Imagine finding a document that claims to explain everything: why empires fall, why revolutions erupt, why markets crash, why familiar hierarchies collapse while new ones quietly take their place.

It does not read like a rant or a sermon. It presents itself as a plan.

The tone is calm, methodical, almost bureaucratic, as if these were simply minutes taken at a meeting no one was meant to know about. What is striking is how little there is to it. This is not a vast tome or a dense ideological treatise, but a slim booklet, barely more than a pamphlet. Easy to read. Easy to pass on. Easy to absorb without effort.

Within those few pages is a confident outline of a long-term strategy for weakening nations, bending institutions, manipulating economies, and ruling from the shadows without ever appearing to rule at all.

The document exists. It is called The Protocols of the Elders of Zion.

It has been exposed, again and again, as a forgery: a political fabrication, crudely plagiarised and assembled for a specific purpose. And yet it refuses to disappear. Not because it is persuasive on its merits, but because the story it tells serves a purpose.

What the Protocols Claim to Be

The Protocols present themselves as the secret minutes of meetings held by a Jewish leadership cabal. From the outset, Jews are named not as individuals, but as a collective actor, jointly responsible for a deliberate plan to dominate non‑Jewish societies. Guilt is not personal or conditional; it is presented as inherent and permanent. What follows is not rage or theology, but strategy: a step-by-step outline of how societies are to be weakened from within.

According to the text, morals are eroded, institutions corrupted, governments destabilised, economies manipulated. Revolutions are encouraged, the press is bent into shape, education softened, authority hollowed out. Nothing is accidental. Nothing is spontaneous. Chaos is not failure; it is design.

The power of the document lies less in its content than in its delivery. There is no overt call to hatred, no emotional outburst. Instead, there is calculated explanation, a tone that invites the reader to feel clever rather than angry. It never instructs the reader to hate Jews; it invites them to observe, to notice, to suspect.

Where the Protocols Actually Came From

The Protocols did not emerge from secret gatherings or hidden archives. It was assembled in late Tsarist Russia, a regime under pressure and running out of answers.

By the end of the nineteenth century, the Russian Empire was wobbling. Political opposition was growing, revolutionary movements were spreading, the economy was unstable, and the monarchy was losing its grip. In such conditions, abstract explanations for disorder were less useful than a named culprit.

The Protocols appear to have been compiled by figures connected to the Okhrana, the Tsarist secret police. It was not written from scratch. Large sections were lifted almost word-for-word from an earlier work: Maurice Joly’s 1864 political satire Dialogue in Hell Between Machiavelli and Montesquieu.

Joly had written a critique of authoritarian rule under Napoleon III. His target was tyranny, not Jews. In the Protocols, Napoleon disappears and Jews take his place. A critique of power is transformed into an accusation of ethnic conspiracy. The plagiarism is obvious, but subtlety was never the point.

How the Forgery Spread

The book did not stay in Russia for long. After the Russian Revolution, it travelled west with émigrés fleeing chaos and defeat. Detached from their origins and stripped of context, it was repackaged as revelation.

Europe after the First World War was fertile ground for this kind of story. Empires had collapsed, borders had shifted, and old certainties had vanished. Many people felt humiliated, disoriented, and angry, without knowing precisely why. The Protocols offered clarity, a single explanation that tied everything together.

It was translated, serialised, and circulated through newspapers and pamphlets. Political movements adopted it eagerly, not because it was well argued, but because it was useful. Repetition did the rest.

Exposure, and Why It Didn’t Matter

This is usually where such stories end. Someone checks the sources, notices the copying, and publishes the proof.

That happened. In 1921, journalists at The Times laid the forgery bare, publishing side-by-side comparisons showing verbatim plagiarism from the earlier French manuscript, leaving no room for doubt. But the plagiarism was not the only tell.

The text contains anachronisms and internal inconsistencies that make its claimed origins impossible: concepts and political anxieties that only make sense after the turn of the twentieth century are retrofitted into supposed nineteenth-century meetings. There is no authenticated original manuscript, only shifting editions that change from printing to printing.

Linguistically, the work bears the marks of having been composed from French sources and awkwardly rendered into Russian, rather than the other way around. Even its first promoters could not agree on where it came from, who recorded it, or when.

Taken together, the evidence leaves no room for doubt. By any reasonable standard, the Protocols should have died there.

It did not. For those already invested in the conclusion, exposure changed nothing. The problem was never a lack of evidence; it was what the document made possible.

From Forgery to Worldview

The influence of this worldview did not remain abstract. The Protocols circulated widely in interwar Europe and helped reinforce existing antisemitic beliefs among political movements that were already looking for an all‑encompassing explanation for national decline. It did not create Nazi ideology, but it helped reinforce it, providing Adolf Hitler and others with what appeared to be documentary confirmation that Jews were not merely an internal enemy, but a coordinated global one.

The Protocols did not invent the antisemitic tropes it contained. Hostility towards Jews had existed for centuries, rooted in religion, exclusion, and economic resentment. What the Protocols provided was something new: a system.

It transformed prejudice into explanation, suspicion into insight, hatred into analysis. Every failure could now be blamed on hidden manipulation. Every reform dismissed as camouflage. Every contradiction folded back in as proof of cunning. The text itself became less important than the logic it imagined.

Why the Story Worked

The Protocols succeeded because it offered something deeply attractive: simplicity.

To people with existing prejudice, it presented a world that seemed to make sense, offering moral clarity in a time of upheaval and a single enemy behind countless unrelated problems. Most importantly, it redirected blame; economic collapse was no longer mismanagement, political corruption was no longer local, and social decay was no longer complicated. It was all someone else’s fault.

This is the true function of conspiracy thinking. It does not explain the world; it excuses it.

Money, Banks, and Selective Vision

The claim that Jews control global finance did not arise from careful observation. It arose from selective vision.

Jewish names are noticed and remembered, while non-Jewish names are ignored. Prominence becomes proof; absence goes unrecorded. This is not analysis, but pattern-hunting driven by expectation.

Global finance, in reality, is sprawling, competitive, fragmented, and often chaotic. Its centres of power have emerged from many different national, cultural, and institutional traditions.

Consider just a handful of major financial organisations whose origins have nothing to do with Jewish networks or continuity: J.P. Morgan, Deutsche Bank, Credit Suisse, HSBC, Barclays, Lloyds, BNP Paribas, Société Générale, UBS, Santander, and the vast post-war accounting and consulting empires that grew into firms such as Coopers & Lybrand, Arthur Andersen, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, and KPMG.

These institutions arose from British imperial finance, American industrial capitalism, European state banking, colonial trade, and post-war corporate expansion. Their histories are public, documented, and often deeply entangled with governments, wars, and national interests. They do not form a single bloc, do not act in concert, and frequently compete or undermine one another.

The conspiracy survives by looking at a narrow slice of the picture and ignoring everything else. A few familiar names are held up as proof, while the rest of the financial world fades conveniently out of view. It persists when people see only what it wants to see.

The Rothschild Fixation

No conspiracy narrative is complete without a symbol. For the Protocols, the Rothschild family became that symbol.

The Rothschilds were a European banking family who rose to prominence in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries by doing something relatively mundane but highly effective: building a cross-border family network that moved money, credit, and information faster than rivals in an age before modern communications. They financed governments during wars, managed state debt, and reinvested profits into railways, industry, and infrastructure, becoming wealthy in the process.

One prominent family is inflated into a stand-in for millions. Wealth becomes limitless, influence omnipresent, history dissolves into myth. Over time, repetition does what evidence cannot, hardening suspicion into certainty. The Rothschilds matter here not for what they did, but for what they are made to represent.

The Protocols Without the Protocols

The ideas embedded in the Protocols did not vanish with their exposure. Instead, they mutated, shedding explicit references while retaining their underlying structure.

Today, few people openly cite the document itself. They no longer need to. The structure remains intact, even as the labels change.

Elders become Zionists. Secret meetings become Israel lobby groups. World domination becomes influence. The same pattern is then applied elsewhere: a small number of Jewish figures in media, politics, or business are treated as evidence of a hidden network, while the much larger number of non-Jewish actors are quietly recast as compromised, coerced, or controlled.

Criticism of Israeli policy – like criticism of any government – is normal in a democracy. What echoes the Protocols is not political disagreement, but the shift from critique to claims of hidden global coordination and the assumption that events only make sense if there is a single, coordinated hand behind everything.

The Legacy: From the Protocols to Modern Conspiracies

One of the most prominent modern examples is the conspiracy theorist David Icke, who has at various points claimed that the Protocols was genuine or at least fundamentally truthful.

Icke has insisted that his theories are not about Jews, instead referring to “ultra‑Zionists” or “Rothschild Zionists” as the real source of global control. Yet the structure of the claim remains unchanged: a small, hidden group, disproportionately Jewish in composition, is said to manipulate media, finance, politics, and war, while non‑Jewish actors are portrayed as compromised, coerced, or controlled.

His denial persists, but the story is recognisably the same.

Why the Legacy Still Matters

The real danger of the Protocols was never confined to the lies it told about Jews. It was the way it taught people to think, and the categories it encouraged people to confuse.

Once a society accepts the idea of a hidden enemy orchestrating events from behind the scenes, evidence stops mattering. Denials become confirmation, contradictions become camouflage. Complex political movements are reduced to secret plots; historical struggles are recast as schemes for domination.

This has had lasting consequences for how Zionism itself is understood. Zionism is not, and never was, a plan for world control or global manipulation. It emerged in the late nineteenth century as an emancipation movement, rooted in the idea of Jewish self‑determination: that Jews, like other peoples in an age of collapsing empires and rising national movements, had the right to political agency and security in their ancestral homeland.

A movement concerned with refuge, autonomy, and survival has been reimagined as a covert strategy for power. Political disagreement has been remodelled as proof of conspiracy; Jewish nationhood has transformed into evidence of global intent.

The lies behind the Protocols endure not because they were persuasive, but because they are convenient. They offer a simple answer that relieves people of responsibility and replaces complexity with a ready-made scapegoat.

That is why, long after the forgery was exposed, its shadow still falls across the present.

Everyone likes the feeling of having spotted something others have missed. But before assuming these numbers expose some hidden truth, it helps to pause and ask a dull but essential question: what do these figures actually measure?

What denial hopes you will forget

Around six million Jews were murdered in the Holocaust. A further five to six million non‑Jews were also murdered by the Nazi regime and its collaborators, including Roma, disabled people, homosexuals, Polish civilians, Soviet prisoners of war, and others.

These figures are not controversial, not provisional, and not the subject of serious historical dispute. They are established by decades of independent research using German records, demographic studies, post‑war investigations, and survivor testimony.

And yet there are still people who insist that the mass murder of Jews is somehow up for debate. They circulate selective statistics, strip them of context, and present them as if they point to a hidden conspiracy rather than to the limits of the data being misused.

This is why the numbers in Holocaust denial circles often look convincing: because they are real. But there is always something missing. The deception is not usually in the number itself, but in what it is claimed to represent.

The trick is simple: take a narrow, incomplete dataset, relabel it as if it were a total, and rely on the reader not checking what has been excluded.

What follows looks at four common claims doing the rounds online. They sound convincing at a glance, yet fall apart the moment anyone slows down.

Claim 1: The Red Cross only reported 271,000 Jewish deaths

You may see figures attributed to the Red Cross – usually between 270,000 and 370,000 deaths – presented as if they represent the total number of Jews murdered in the Holocaust.

The truth

The Red Cross never conducted a census of Holocaust victims and never claimed to have calculated the total number of Jews murdered.

What the data actually shows

The figures being misused come from a partial set of death records for registered prisoners who died in Nazi camps. Some of these death certificates were issued by camp administrations during the war itself (for example, the Auschwitz death books), while others were later compiled from surviving German documentation after the war.

Crucially, these records only cover prisoners who were formally registered and whose deaths were administratively recorded. Even within individual camps, the records are incomplete, inconsistent, and in some cases deliberately destroyed.

By the early post-war years, a few hundred thousand such death records had been identified and collated. This figure reflects surviving administrative paperwork for registered camp deaths. It does not represent the total number of people murdered during the Holocaust.

The truth

These comparisons rely on mismatched data: different geographies, different methods, and figures that were never intended to be read as a single continuous census.

Many post‑war population tables, including those in the World Almanac, relied heavily on pre‑war demographic data. In several editions, the figures reproduced after the war were still based on estimates from 1938 or earlier, simply carried forward because no reliable post‑war census data yet existed. This was not a secret or a plot, but a practical limitation.

Europe was devastated, borders had shifted, and millions of people were displaced or stateless. Accurate population data did not exist immediately after 1945, so earlier estimates were reused while censuses were rebuilt.

What the data actually shows

On the eve of the Second World War, the global Jewish population was roughly 16.5 to 17 million, with around 9.5 million Jews living in Europe.

By the end of the war, Europe’s Jewish population had fallen to roughly 3.5 to 4 million. Globally, the Jewish population stood at around 11 to 12 million. The missing six million are overwhelmingly European Jews.

Reliable figures only emerged in the late 1950s and 1960s, once borders stabilised and refugees were resettled. At the same time, Jewish populations in the Middle East and North Africa began to be counted more consistently, alongside migration to Britain, the Americas, and Israel.

Deniers mix European and global figures, pre‑war estimates and post‑war counts, then accuse historians of dishonesty for the confusion they themselves manufacture.

Claim 3: Auschwitz was said to have four million victims, then later revised to one million

Another frequently cited claim points to an old plaque at Auschwitz which stated that four million people were murdered there. Since the figure was later revised downwards, deniers present this as proof that Holocaust numbers were exaggerated.

The truth

The four million figure was a post‑war Soviet estimate, produced in the immediate aftermath of liberation when access to German records was limited and casualty figures across occupied territories were routinely inflated.

Although Western historians questioned it early on, the figure remained on official Auschwitz plaques throughout the Communist period and was only formally removed after the collapse of the Soviet bloc.

It was never the result of detailed historical research, nor was it universally accepted by Western historians.

What actually changed

As German documentation, transport records, and demographic studies became available, historians revised the Auschwitz death toll to around 1.1 million victims, the vast majority of them Jews.

The revision reflects improved evidence, not the exposure of a hoax. It shows how early post-war estimates were corrected as better data emerged.

Claim 4: “Six million Jews” was mentioned before the Holocaust, proving it was planned

You may also see claims that references to “six million Jews” before the Second World War prove the Holocaust was scripted in advance, as if the number were known ahead of time.

The truth

Before the war, a very large proportion of Europe’s Jews lived in Eastern Europe, particularly in areas that had once formed the Pale of Settlement under the Russian Empire. This population was already vulnerable, having endured decades of pogroms, upheaval following the First World War, and extreme instability after the Russian Revolution.

When newspapers, charities, or Jewish organisations referred to “six million Jews” at risk, they were talking about a population concentration under persistent threat, not a death toll. That did not mean Jews elsewhere were marginal or safe.

What the data actually tells us

Millions lived across the rest of Europe, in countries such as France, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Greece, and the Balkans – and Nazi policy targeted Jews wherever German power extended.

Headlines about “six million Jews” at risk referred to Eastern Europe; they did not predict the Holocaust, but later came to mirror its outcome. The fact that these figures align is coincidence, not foreknowledge.

The population existed first, and its destruction followed.

Deniers reverse cause and effect, they treat pre‑war demographic estimates as evidence of prior knowledge – to them it’s a conspiracy, a sign that it was all planned in advance.

Moving Forwards

Holocaust denial almost never talks about Roma, Poles, Soviet POWs, disabled people, or anyone else murdered by the Nazi regime. Not seriously, not consistently, and not in a way that actually disputes their deaths.

The obsession is overwhelmingly with Jewish victims.

Holocaust denial does not survive serious scrutiny, so it relies on speed, screenshots, and the hope that nobody will slow down long enough to check what they are actually being shown.

The next time a cropped table or dramatic statistic flashes past your screen, ask three simple questions:

• What exactly is being counted?

• What is missing from the count?

• Has the scope quietly changed between one figure and the next?

If the meme cannot answer those questions, it is not exposing a lie. It is selling one.

And if a claim falls apart the moment you ask how the number was produced, that is not a revelation. It is a warning sign.

You’ve possibly seen it floating randomly into comment sections like a smug little perfume cloud. The noticing. The noticers. People are noticing.

It’s often written like a wink. Like you’re supposed to lean in and go, Ohh… right. I see.

But here’s the problem: half the people sharing it don’t even know what it means. The other half know exactly what it means and like that it stays vague.

So let’s translate it into normal human language.

What “the noticing” actually means

On the surface, “people are starting to notice” sounds harmless. Like:

• “People are noticing corruption.”

• “People are noticing hypocrisy.”

• “People are noticing patterns.”

That’s the bait.

But in the far-right and conspiracy-heavy corners of the internet, “the noticing” is a dog-whistle. It’s coded language for:

“People are waking up to the idea that Jews secretly control society.”

That’s the payload.

It’s not new, either. It’s a recycled version of older antisemitic conspiracy fantasies, including ideas popularised by The Protocols of the Elders of Zion – an antisemitic forgery that claimed Jews secretly control the world.

They rarely say “Jews” out loud, because the whole point is to avoid consequences. If challenged, they can do the coward’s shuffle:

• “I didn’t say Jews.”

• “You’re the one who brought Jews into it.”

• “I meant elites.”

• “I meant globalists.”

• “I meant bankers.”

Right. And I meant the tooth fairy.

“The noticing” is not a discovery. It’s a half-baked rebrand.

It’s the same ancient superstition dressed up as modern “pattern recognition”. It’s conspiracy with a smirk.

What are people supposed to be “noticing”, exactly?

This is where the mask slips.

In practice, “noticing” usually looks like this:

• a list of Jewish surnames in media companies

• screenshots of Jewish politicians or donors

• selective examples of Jewish people in high-status jobs

• dramatic insinuations about war, money, “lobbies”, and “influence”

It’s rarely careful, balanced, or honest. It’s cherry-picking, combined with a pre-decided conclusion.

Then it gets framed as if it’s forbidden knowledge. Like they’ve uncovered something you’re “not allowed to say”.

That feeling of being the brave truth-teller is the hook.

Noticing doesn’t require understanding anything. It doesn’t require reading history, economics, politics, or law.

It just requires one ingredient: a scapegoat.

What they never prove

The noticers want you to believe they’re doing analysis, when really they’re doing a party trick.

They “notice” that some Jewish people exist in influential industries and then leap straight to a conclusion they decided on beforehand.

But they never prove the part that matters.

They never prove:

• that individual success equals group control

• that presence equals coordination

• that a handful of prominent names equals a unified agenda

• that competing interests and messy politics magically disappear behind one invisible hand

Even if a group is overrepresented in a particular industry, that is not evidence of a secret conspiracy. It’s evidence of history, migration patterns, urban concentration, education, incentives, and ordinary human ambition.

And the real giveaway is how selective it all is.

If “noticing” was genuine curiosity, you’d see the same energy aimed at other obvious patterns too.

Like US dominance in social media and streaming. Or China’s dominance in manufacturing. Or Indian dominance in IT and engineering. Or Italian dominance in food culture. Or the way certain industries end up clustered in certain cities.

But those don’t come with a ready-made villain or a centuries-old hatred to plug into.

So they don’t ‘notice’ them.

Because this isn’t about understanding power.

It’s about blaming Jews for it.

Why it spreads so easily

There are three reasons this stuff spreads like mould:

1. It’s vague on purpose. It dodges moderation and it dodges accountability.

2. It flatters the audience. It makes people feel clever. Like they’re “awake” and everyone else is asleep.

3. It’s emotionally satisfying. If you’re angry, overwhelmed, or struggling, a conspiracy offers you something simple: a villain.

And there’s another reason people don’t like admitting:

4. It’s trolling.

Not everyone sharing this is a committed ideologue. A lot of them are just trying to be edgy, trying to get a reaction, trying to watch people lose their temper.

They want the thrill of being “forbidden” without the responsibility of saying anything clearly.

Real life is complicated. “The noticing” is not.

It’s one explanation for everything.

And when you have one explanation for everything, you never have to think again.

The bread delivery’s late?

Your latte tastes slightly off?

You open WhatsApp, see someone typing, get a little spike of hope, and then… nothing?

Jews.

Everything. Always. The same answer.

It’s almost impressive how quickly “noticing” becomes a universal solvent. It dissolves every problem down to one lazy conclusion.

And it’s convenient, isn’t it?

Because if you can blame one group for everything, you never have to understand anything.

What “the noticing” is really for

The noticing isn’t meant to be debated, it’s meant to be repeated.

It’s a meme. It’s recruitment.

It’s the online equivalent of someone sidling up to you in a pub and whispering, “I’m not racist, but…” and then watching your face to see if you’re one of them.

If you laugh, you’re in.

If you object, they act innocent.

It’s plausible deniability with a loaded gun behind it.

The boring truth they hate

Here’s what the noticers can’t stand:

Sometimes reality is boring. Sometimes a thing happens because:

• markets are messy

• governments are incompetent

• institutions are slow

• people are selfish

• systems are complex

• incentives matter

• history has consequences

Not because a single ethnic group is pulling invisible strings.

The point of scapegoating Jews isn’t accuracy.

It’s convenience.

It’s easier to blame an entire group than it is to take responsibility, tolerate uncertainty, or admit that life is messy and unfair.

So instead of dealing with the real causes of problems, they outsource their frustration to an imaginary puppet-master and call it ‘insight’.

Final point, because it matters

If someone genuinely wants to talk about power in society, fine. Let’s do it properly.

We can talk about:

• corporate lobbying

• state propaganda

• censorship

• media incentives

• class interests

• institutional capture

• foreign policy failures

But “the noticing” isn’t that.

It’s not analysis and it’s not courage.

It’s recycled bigotry, packaged as edgy wisdom for people who want the feeling of being right without the burden of being honest.

So yes.

People are “starting to notice”.

Not the truth.

Just how embarrassingly easy it is to sell the oldest hatred in the world to a new generation – so long as you wrap it in a joke and keep it vague enough to deny.

A Brief Lesson in Chronology

While we know little about the historical Jesus, we do know that he lived in the early first century CE. He grew up in Galilee, travelled through Judea and Samaria, and worshipped in Jerusalem.

All of these places were under Roman control, but they were distinct regions, known by those names at the time.

None of them were called “Palestine”, and nobody living there thought of themselves as “Palestinian”, because that identity quite literally did not exist.

When the Name Appeared

The name Syria Palaestina only appears after 135 CE, following the Bar Kokhba revolt, when Rome deliberately renamed the province as a punitive gesture, dropping ‘Judea’ and extending the name of a coastal region historically associated with the Philistines, Israel’s ancient enemies.

This happened more than a century after Jesus had been executed.

Even then, it was an administrative label imposed by an empire, not the name of a people or a national identity.

The modern Palestinian national identity emerged in the twentieth century, during the British Mandate period, and largely in response to Jewish migration and competing national claims. Retroactively assigning a modern political identity to a first-century Jew is not historical insight. It is political ventriloquism.

This is what historians call an anachronism. Everyone else calls it making things up.

Who Jesus Was

On the question of who Jesus actually was, there is no serious debate at all, no matter how much some people wish there were.

There were no modern borders, no asylum systems, and no permanent displacement. The family left, waited out a perceived threat, and according to scripture returned to the ‘Land of Israel’ – still not Palestine.

That is not refugee status. It is a short‑term move within a single empire.

Calling Jesus a refugee relies entirely on modern legal and political definitions that did not exist in the first century. This is political branding, not history.

Why this Nonsense Persists

Because “Palestinian refugee Jesus” works as a slogan. It is emotionally useful. It allows people to project modern political narratives backwards in time and dress them up as ancient truth.

For some people it seems that accuracy is optional, but slogans are not facts.

The boring reality

Let’s start with the dull, unromantic reality – because the myth relies on people not checking it.

In the years that followed, the story took on a life of its own – resurfacing again and again, fuelled further by the fevered atmosphere of the Crusades, and culminating in the massacre of the Jews of York in 1190, one of the darkest consequences of the hysteria first sparked in Norwich.

A template for future accusations

The blood libel worked so well that it became a template. You didn’t need proof. You didn’t even need a body. You only needed a crowd willing to believe that Jews were capable of the worst crimes imaginable. Invent a horror. Attach it to the Jews. Watch hatred ignite. That was the formula, and it never stopped being useful.

Over time the accusation simply changed shape. When the original charge of blood-soaked matzos became too medieval for polite society to repeat with a straight face, antisemites modernised it. When crises struck, Jews were blamed. When societies were afraid, Jews were cast as the hidden hand.

The details changed, but the purpose stayed the same: to portray Jews as monsters in the shadows.

Weaponising history

Before diving into the newest mutations, it’s worth confronting the tiny fragment of truth antisemites twist into weapons. This fragment exists – but it does not resemble the conspiracies built from them.

In the 1990s, Israel’s state forensic institute mishandled organ removal from all deceased bodies in its care without proper family consent – Jews, Arabs, soldiers, civilians. It was a medical scandal, not a targeted campaign. The rumour was revived in 2009 by a Swedish tabloid that ran an evidence‑free claim about the IDF killing Palestinians to harvest their organs; a sloppy headline became the backbone of a modern myth.

This event was human, limited, contextual – and globally not that unique. Antisemites cling to it precisely because they have little else: the lie needs fragments of truth to disguise itself as something more than fantasy.

From truth to fantasy

This is where the leap happens: from isolated, documented, human failings to full‑blown, medieval‑style accusations dressed up as political commentary.

Today, they don’t need William of Norwich to rile up the crowds. They have hashtags, edited videos, blatant lies and media spin. They have propaganda dressed up as activism.

And with each retelling, the fantasy mutates and grows. Israel is accused of harvesting organs not only from Palestinians but, absurdly, from victims in Haiti after the earthquake, and now even from Jamaica, when a medical team was sent from Israel in the aftermath of the recent hurricane – as if Jewish doctors roam the globe with portable coolers looking for bodies to plunder.

It’s medieval superstition exported worldwide.

The accusations are the same in spirit, just dressed for the modern age. Now the story is that Israelis steal organs. That they kill children on purpose. That they contaminate everything around them. That they manufacture suffering to profit from it. That Jewish bloodlust is eternal, only the tools have changed.

These claims aren’t political criticisms. They are the medieval blood libel retold for people who believe anything if it is shouted loudly enough.

Online it spreads even faster. A rumour, a half-truth, a shaky news story – and suddenly millions believe they’ve uncovered a secret conspiracy. Put it through even the slightest fact‑check and it falls apart.

The only thing that survives the scrutiny is the hatred behind it.

Why people still fall for it

The blood libel gives people something they crave: permission. Permission to hate, permission to dehumanise, permission to convince themselves that cruelty is justice.

Jews in medieval Europe were powerless. Israel today is a tiny state in a volatile region. But the blood libel flips that upside down. It turns the vulnerable into the predator. It turns reality into theatre. It gives people the thrill of imagining themselves as righteous while spreading poisonous nonsense.

Why the term matters now

Calling something a blood libel isn’t exaggeration – it’s diagnosis. Anytime Jews are accused of secret killings, ritualistic cruelty, harvesting organs, you are seeing the same script that was written in the twelfth century.

Once a society believes a group murders children for pleasure or profit, everything becomes justified – the threats, the boycotts, the vandalism, the violence. Hatred becomes a civic duty.

Breaking the pattern

The blood libel survived nearly a millennium because people enjoyed repeating it. They liked the simplicity of having a villain who couldn’t fight back. They liked the feeling of moral superiority that comes from believing you’re resisting some imagined horror.

The medieval lie about blood in matzos never died. It just changed costume.

Today it appears as organ-harvesting fantasies, viral rumours, protest chants and slickly edited propaganda. The language is modern, but the hatred is medieval.

It’s the same lie. The same thrill. The same poison. And it will keep returning until people learn to recognise it for what it always was: a conspiracy that survives by dehumanising the same target over and over again.

Few lies are as obscene as the idea that Kristallnacht – the Nazi-organised pogrom of November 1938 – was some sort of understandable “reaction” to a Jewish act of violence. It’s the kind of twisted inversion only antisemites could invent: blaming Jews for their own persecution, pretending a pogrom was provoked, and parroting Nazi propaganda nearly ninety years after it was written.

The lie centres on a 17-year-old Polish Jew named Herschel Grynszpan, who shot a German diplomat in Paris. The Nazis spun his desperate act into a nationwide justification for destruction, murder and mass arrests – and ever since, those sympathetic to antisemitic narratives have repeated it, sometimes knowingly, sometimes out of ignorance.

The truth is brutally simple: Kristallnacht was not a reaction. It was a carefully orchestrated event, executed by the Nazi regime itself, planned and encouraged from the top down. The shooting was merely the excuse.

The convenient pretext

On 7 November 1938, Herschel Grynszpan walked into the German embassy in Paris and shot a junior diplomat named Ernst vom Rath. Grynszpan’s parents had just been expelled from Germany as part of a mass deportation of Polish Jews. Thousands were stranded in freezing conditions on the border, stateless and destitute. When Herschel received a letter from his family describing their suffering, he acted out of rage and despair – not ideology. He had no links to any political organisation or conspiracy.

When Ernst vom Rath died two days later, the Nazi regime immediately declared him a martyr to “Jewish terrorism.” Within hours, Joseph Goebbels, the regime’s propaganda minister, saw an opportunity. He urged the Party’s regional leaders to “allow demonstrations” and not interfere with the “outrage of the German people.” That was the signal.

This wasn’t spontaneous outrage. It was state-sanctioned violence, fuelled by years of antisemitic indoctrination and prepared logistical coordination.

The real plan

On the nights of 9–10 November 1938, Nazi paramilitaries – many of them disguised as ordinary civilians – joined actual civilians in smashing Jewish shop windows, burning synagogues, looting homes and attacking anyone identifiable as Jewish.

Fire brigades were ordered to stand by and protect non-Jewish property only. Police were told not to intervene unless Aryan-owned property was threatened.

The result was catastrophic: more than 7,000 Jewish businesses destroyed, over 1,400 synagogues burned, around 100 Jews murdered, and 30,000 men sent to concentration camps. In some towns, Jews were beaten to death in the street while their neighbours watched.

Nazi propaganda portrayed the attacks as a spontaneous public reaction, but internal Nazi communications prove it was coordinated at the highest levels of the regime.

The pogrom was the final warning before open genocide. It made clear that Jewish life in Germany had no future, and that ordinary Germans could commit violence with impunity if Jews were the target.

Herschel Grynszpan: the scapegoat

After his arrest in France, Grynszpan became a pawn in competing propaganda games. The Nazis wanted to stage a grand show trial to prove a “world Jewish conspiracy.” But that idea fell apart when they realised Grynszpan might expose something inconvenient: that he potentially had a homosexual relationship with vom Rath that could undermine their martyrdom narrative. Hitler quietly cancelled the trial. Grynszpan disappeared into the concentration camp system; his fate remains uncertain.

To this day, conspiracy theorists pretend his action “started” Kristallnacht – a claim that ignores everything known about Nazi planning and the deliberate orchestration of the pogrom.

It’s like blaming the victims of an arson attack for owning the building.

The Nazi pattern: blame the Jews

The idea that Jews provoke their own persecution is as old as antisemitism itself. Medieval massacres were blamed on “ritual murder” lies; pogroms in Eastern Europe were justified as “revenge” for imagined insults. Kristallnacht was simply the modern version – bureaucratically efficient, state-organised, and dressed up in Goebbels’s propaganda as a national outburst.

That lie still circulates today, often repackaged in new clothes. The same people who claim Kristallnacht was “triggered by a Jewish assassin” will also tell you that Israel “provokes” attacks or that Jews “control” the media. It’s the same diseased logic – a refusal to accept Jewish agency, self-defence, or even existence without finding a way to make it a provocation.

Facts over fiction

The historical record is not ambiguous:

• The pogrom was ordered and coordinated by Nazi officials, not by mobs acting independently.

• Directives from Reinhard Heydrich instructed police to arrest Jews, not protect them.

• Goebbels’s diary explicitly records his involvement and Hitler’s approval.

• Herschel Grynszpan acted alone, and his act was not politically motivated beyond personal despair.

Every reputable historian agrees on these points. There is no serious debate – only malicious distortion by those eager to rewrite history.

The lesson

Kristallnacht matters because it marked the transition from discrimination to destruction. It was the moment Nazi antisemitism turned into open, physical violence on a national scale. Less than three years later came the ghettos, the Einsatzgruppen, and the death camps.

When modern propagandists echo Goebbels’s excuses – claiming Jews “brought it on themselves” – they aren’t just repeating history; they’re participating in it.

To challenge that lie isn’t just historical housekeeping. It’s moral hygiene.

Modern echoes

Today, antisemitic narratives reappear with different names but the same intent. The same logic that excused broken glass now excuses rocket fire, knife attacks, and pogroms in tweets. The difference is only the setting and the hashtags.

The duty of anyone with a conscience is to stop those lies before they harden again into glass.

This myth didn’t appear out of thin air. It was built on fragments of truth – a few misunderstandings, a few bureaucratic failures – and inflated into a moral outrage designed to reinforce the idea that Israel is a racist state.

From Famine to Falsehood

The accusation emerged decades after the famine and civil war of the 1980s, when Israel carried out extraordinary rescue operations – Operation Moses in 1984 and Operation Solomon in 1991 – bringing tens of thousands of Ethiopian Jews to safety.

These were people who had fled persecution under the Marxist Derg regime, walked through deserts, and endured years in squalid refugee camps plagued by starvation, disease, and violence.

In those camps, and later during resettlement, some women were offered Depo‑Provera – a long‑acting contraceptive used worldwide, especially where regular medical access is limited. It was a common humanitarian measure, intended to prevent unplanned pregnancies during an unstable and dangerous period.

Treatment was initiated in Ethiopia and sometimes continued in Israel unquestioned. The intent was medical and practical, not malicious or political.

The Spark

Then came the spark. In 2012, a documentary surfaced featuring testimonies from a few Ethiopian women who said they hadn’t understood the nature of the injections.

The footage spread like wildfire, and within weeks, activist networks and journalists transformed a story about poor communication into one about deliberate sterilisation – a supposed state conspiracy echoing colonial eugenics.

It was a perfect moral outrage: emotional, simple, and impossible to disprove once belief took hold. The fact that Depo‑Provera wears off after three months, or that it’s routinely used across much of the globe, didn’t stand a chance against the click‑bait headline: Israel sterilises black Jews.

The Investigation

The outrage forced Israel’s Health Ministry to launch an inquiry in 2013. Its conclusion was clear: there was no policy to reduce Ethiopian birth rates and no evidence of coercion.

What investigators did find was mundane – a breakdown in communication, cultural barriers, and inconsistent medical explanations; as a consequence, a directive was issued that doctors should not administer Depo-Provera to Ethiopian women if there was any concern they did not understand the treatment.

Bad practice isn’t a conspiracy, but nuance doesn’t make good propaganda. The word “sterilisation” stuck. The context vanished. Activists got their talking point, and the internet got its outrage.

How the Myth Spread

Why did it spread so fast? Because it hit all the right emotional buttons.

It painted Israel as a colonial, white‑supremacist power oppressing darker‑skinned Jews – a story that fits neatly into the anti‑Israel playbook. Never mind that the majority of Israelis nowadays are Mizrahi or Sephardi, or that it was Israel that airlifted these same Ethiopian Jews to safety from famine and war.

Facts are no match for ideology.

Propaganda thrives on distortion. It takes a bureaucratic mistake and turns it into moral ammunition. It’s far easier to accuse Israel of racism than to acknowledge that humanitarian chaos breeds miscommunication.

Conclusion

There was no sterilisation policy. No secret plan. No eugenics experiment. There was a refugee crisis, a struggling bureaucracy, and the inevitable human errors that come with it. Yet this ordinary, fixable failure was repackaged into a racial scandal – one that still circulates today, long after it was debunked.

The Depo‑Provera affair is a masterclass in modern propaganda. It shows how quickly compassion can be twisted into condemnation, how context gets erased, and how outrage replaces evidence.

Like so many accusations levelled at Israel, it tells us nothing about the country itself – and everything about the people who need it to be guilty.

It seems there’s no limit to the things some people will accuse Israel of stealing. Land, water, culture, and now – apparently – lunch.

Falafel. Hummus. Za’atar. These humble staples of the Middle East have somehow become yet another battleground in the ongoing campaign to delegitimise Israel. It’s the sort of claim that sounds serious until you say it out loud: the Jews stole our chickpeas.

That’s right – there’s a whole genre of commentary out there insisting that Israelis “appropriated” Palestinian food, rebranded it, and passed it off as their own.

Forget tanks and treaties; the real war is apparently being fought over fried legumes.

Ancient Origins and Shared Plates

But here’s the problem with this culinary conspiracy theory: none of these foods actually belong to anyone in particular. Falafel didn’t sprout fully formed in a Palestinian kitchen – it almost certainly came from Egypt, where Coptic Christians made ta‘miyya (fried fava bean balls) during Lent. Chickpeas were a later substitution, spreading north through the Levant along trade routes. By the time the first Zionists showed up, Jews from Alexandria to Aleppo were already deep-frying something similar.

Hummus is even older. Recipes for chickpea paste mixed with tahini appear in 13th-century Arabic cookbooks, though similar purees of legumes and olive oil were common throughout the ancient Mediterranean, from Greece to Egypt. These Arabic versions refined and formalised much older regional traditions, drawing on centuries of shared culinary practice stretching back to the classical world.

The Ottomans later popularised and diversified it across their vast empire, and by the time of the British Mandate, it was as universal as tea and gossip. To claim ownership over hummus is like trying to trademark bread.

And za’atar? The word shows up in biblical and Talmudic texts, centuries before the modern Middle East took shape. The herb Origanum syriacum grows wild across the region. If anyone’s ancestors have bragging rights, it’s probably the goats.

So when activists online scream that Israel “stole” falafel, it’s worth asking: what exactly was stolen? Recipes evolve, migrate, and mingle – just like people. The Jews who came from Yemen, Morocco, and Iraq brought their own regional cuisines, which fused naturally with what was already there.

What emerged was Israeli food – because that’s how cultures work. You live somewhere long enough, you start eating like the neighbours.

But of course, that isn’t really the point. The outrage isn’t about food at all – it’s about identity. The same people who insist Israel has no historical roots in the region now claim it has no culinary ones either. If you can convince the world that even its street food is stolen, then the state itself starts to look counterfeit.

It’s a perfect metaphor for a politics that’s long run out of substance: when you can’t win on history, geography, or morality, attack the menu.

The Absurdity of It All

The irony is delicious. Falafel, hummus, and za’atar aren’t proof of division – they’re proof of connection. Jews, Arabs, Christians – all have dipped their bread in the same bowl for centuries. To turn that shared heritage into a weapon is to miss the point entirely.

God forbid an Arab enjoys a beigel – would that be cultural appropriation too? And what happens if someone starts frying a latke in Cairo? Will we need a UN resolution?

Or maybe next time, the IDF will be accused of smuggling out hummus under the cover of darkness, chased down cobblestone alleys by furious chefs wielding rolling pins and kebab skewers. Somewhere, an international tribunal will debate the rightful owner of the falafel recipe while Interpol’s new Chickpea Task Force prepares a sting operation on a Tel Aviv food truck.

Whatever will they accuse Israel of stealing next? The sunlight? The sea?

Maybe one day they’ll accept a recipe for peace!

Amid the panic, one of the most explosive claims to emerge was that Israel had reactivated the long-revoked “Hannibal Directive” – a secret military doctrine allegedly allowing soldiers to use overwhelming force to stop abductions, even at risk to hostages. Some now claim that every Israeli death that day was self-inflicted under this directive.

This article separates fact from accusation, examining what Hannibal really was, how it has been used, and whether it helps explain the events of that day.

What the Hannibal Directive Was

The Hannibal Directive was created in 1986 after a series of abductions in Lebanon. Its purpose was clear but morally complex: prevent Israeli soldiers from being captured by the enemy.

While never written as an order to kill one’s own, it allowed heavy force to block a kidnapping, even if that meant endangering the captive. It was eventually revoked in 2016 and replaced by new rules forbidding any deliberate harm to hostages.

The Attack and Its Aftermath

The massacre was initiated and executed by Hamas, whose fighters crossed the border with clear intent to murder and abduct civilians. Being caught in the crossfire amid the disorder does not change the fact that Israel was the victim of a brutal, premeditated terrorist assault.

It was an act of coordinated violence that shattered the country’s sense of security and marked a moment of deep national trauma.

Breakdown and Confusion

In the fog of the Hamas assault, communications collapsed. Hundreds of hostages – soldiers and civilians – were dragged across the border into Gaza.

As the IDF scrambled to respond, unconfirmed reports suggested that some units received messages echoing Hannibal’s language, to “prevent crossings into Gaza at all cost.” According to Haaretz, one early morning message read: “Hannibal at Erez – dispatch a drone.”

Other testimonies describe tank crews and pilots firing on convoys heading toward the fence, fearing that captives were being taken into Gaza. It is true that incidents of friendly fire occurred, and the IDF has admitted as much.

In early 2025, former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant also acknowledged that a form of the Hannibal order had been authorised, stating, “I think that, tactically, in some places, it was given, and in other places, it was not given, and that is a problem,” suggesting a lack of certainty and leaving it unclear which part he viewed as a problem.

What happened appears to have been confusion, not doctrine – individual commanders making impossible split-second decisions in a situation that defied control.

The Conspiracy Narrative

Ever since then, a conspiracy theory has circulated claiming that Israel either allowed or staged the attacks to justify its subsequent invasion of Gaza. This claim, now amplified on social media, distorts both motive and reality. The suggestion that Israel orchestrated its own national catastrophe ignores the clear proof of Hamas planning, the communications intercepts, and the sheer scale of the slaughter that began within minutes of the breach.

Attempts to use Hannibal as evidence that Israel orchestrated the events of 7 October further this false narrative and insult the victims. The directive, even when invoked, applies only to immediate battlefield scenarios – not to the calculated slaughter of civilians in their homes, at a music festival, and on the roads.

To conflate these two is to turn tragedy into conspiracy. The killings were not a government plot, nor a justification for war, but a moment of national trauma – one born of barbarism, not bureaucracy.

Why the Claim Persists

For Israel’s critics, Hannibal has become shorthand for the idea that the IDF deliberately kills its own to deny Hamas propaganda victories. It fits the narrative of a ruthless army willing to sacrifice its citizens.

Yet this interpretation ignores both scale and context. The massacre on 7 October was carried out by Hamas – the systematic murder, rape and abduction of civilians was deliberate and planned. The IDF’s response, by contrast, was reactionary, disorganised and at times tragically misguided, but it was aimed at halting the attack, not executing civilians.

Some journalists have conflated individual acts of panic with official strategy. Others use “Hannibal” as a catch-all explanation for every death that day, as though the IDF, not Hamas, bore ultimate responsibility.

This oversimplification distorts reality. The vast majority of the 1,200 Israelis killed were murdered by Hamas, not killed by Israeli fire. To claim otherwise erases both motive and agency – and turns self-defence into self-destruction.

A Doctrine of Desperation

The Hannibal Directive is not just a military order – it is a symbol of Israel’s deepest fear: being powerless while its people are dragged away.

On 7 October, that fear became reality. Some soldiers may have reverted instinctively to a mindset born of past traumas, but that is not proof of policy. It is proof of human panic under siege.

In the end, Hannibal remains both misunderstood and the term misused – a ghost of past wars resurrected by rumour. To treat it as the defining issue of 7 October is to misunderstand the day itself.

What happened was not an Israeli policy gone rogue, but an Israeli nightmare come true – one that no directive could have prepared for.

The claim is seductive in its simplicity – that Ashkenazi Jews aren’t descended from the Israelites, but from a Turkic tribe in the Caucasus that converted to Judaism in the Middle Ages. According to this myth, modern Jews are impostors.

Convenient, isn’t it? One pseudohistorical story that wipes away three thousand years of Jewish continuity and their ancestral link to the Land of Israel.

The truth is nowhere near as convenient.

The Real Khazars

The Khazar Empire thrived between the seventh and tenth centuries CE, straddling the Black and Caspian Seas. It was a Turkic-led trading state linking Byzantium and the Abbasid Caliphate, a crossroads of languages and faiths.

Around the eighth century, a small group of Khazar nobles converted to Judaism – an elite gesture intended to maintain neutrality in political disputes between Islam and Christianity. But there’s no evidence of mass conversion, no archaeological sign of Jewish dominance, and certainly no migration that could explain millions of European Jews.

From this sliver of truth, an empire of fantasy was born.

From History to Weapon

The theory first appeared in the nineteenth century when European scholars, obsessed with racial origins, speculated about Jewish ancestry. But Arthur Koestler’s 1976 book The Thirteenth Tribe gave it oxygen. Koestler’s goal was oddly well-intentioned – he hoped to end antisemitism by showing Jews were converts. Instead, he handed antisemites a perfect tool.

The Soviets seized on it during the Cold War to paint Israel as a colonial project of European impostors. Arab nationalists and Islamists echoed it, and today it’s repeated by online conspiracists and some far-left activists who argue that if Jews are not from the Middle East, Israel has no legitimacy. It was never history; it was propaganda.

The Evidence

Modern genetics has settled the question. Study after study shows that Ashkenazi Jews share deep Middle Eastern ancestry with other Jewish populations. Their Y-chromosomes and mitochondrial DNA trace overwhelmingly to the Levant, with some southern European admixture – no Turkic or Caucasian footprint. Linguistics agrees: Yiddish is a Germanic language with Hebrew and Slavic influences, not a single Turkic root.

In addition to genetic and linguistic evidence, several other lines of evidence also disprove the Khazar theory:

1. Historical sources – Medieval Jewish, Byzantine, and Muslim records mention Jewish communities in Europe long before the Khazar conversion, showing continuity from ancient Israelite exiles.

2. Archaeological evidence – No Jewish artefacts, inscriptions, or settlements from Khazaria have been found that link to Ashkenazi culture or migration patterns.

3. Cultural and religious continuity – Rabbinic texts, liturgical traditions, and the use of Hebrew remained consistent between the ancient Levant and European Jewish communities, not Turkic or Central Asian.

4. Demographic logic – The Khazar population was far too small to account for the millions of Ashkenazi Jews who later emerged in Europe.

The verdict is clear: Jews came from the Middle East, not the steppe.

Why It Endures

Because it’s useful. The Khazar theory gives antisemites and anti-Zionists a fig leaf of scholarship. It allows them to deny Jewish continuity, to argue that Israel is foreign and Jews are frauds. It survives not because it’s true, but because it serves an agenda.

But the facts are stubborn. The Jewish people existed for more than a millennium before the Khazar Empire – and they endure long after it vanished.

The Irony

A handful of Khazars may indeed have become Jews, absorbed into a people far older and more enduring than any empire. Rather than disproving Jewish history, it reaffirms it; the Jewish world has always welcomed converts and carried its identity across exile and time.

Ashkenazi Jews are not Khazars. They are the descendants of Israelites – scattered, reborn, and still very much at home in the land that first gave them their name.

The claim that “Arabs are Semites too” often implies that Arabs cannot be antisemitic – because, in theory, it would mean hating their own kind.

The phrase sounds clever, but it misses the historical point. The term antisemitism was coined in a very specific time and place to describe hatred of Jews – and only Jews.

Biblical Origins

The word Semite has changed meaning many times over the centuries. It started as a biblical idea, then became a label for languages, and later was twisted by racists and nationalists.

It all goes back to the Bible. In the Book of Genesis, Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. People believed that Shem’s descendants spread across the Middle East. So when European scholars in the 1700s began studying old languages like Hebrew, Arabic, and Aramaic, they thought these must be the languages of Shem’s people.

They called them Semitic languages, a label that reflected the connection scholars saw between the peoples and tongues they were studying.

At the time, some scholars also spoke of “Semitic peoples,” a category that included Hebrews, Arabs, Akkadians, Arameans, and others. This was part of an early racial and biblical classification system that treated language, ancestry, and culture as one.

Modern anthropology and linguistics have since rejected that view, keeping “Semitic” as a term for a language family rather than a race or ethnic group.

Early Linguistic Use

In 1781, a German historian named August Ludwig von Schlözer first used the term Semitic in this way. Another scholar, Johann Gottfried Eichhorn, helped make it popular. Back then, people thought language, race, and religion were all linked.

To them, being a Semite meant being part of the same ancient family.

Languages spread and mix across cultures and regions. Someone could speak Arabic without being Arab, or Hebrew could be studied or used by people who weren’t Jewish.

So the word Semitic stayed in use, but now only meant a language group, not a race.

Racial Misuse and the Rise of “Aryan”

But the linguistic label didn’t stay neutral for long. In the 1800s, some European thinkers began twisting it again. Writers like Ernest Renan spoke about “Semitic peoples” as if they were a single race with unchangeable traits, often described as less advanced than Europeans.

These ideas were not science – they were early forms of racism pretending to be science.

Around the same time, another term entered the conversation: Aryan. Originally, it came from the ancient Indo-Iranian word arya, meaning “noble.” It was first used by linguists to describe the Indo-European language family – the vast group that includes Latin, Greek, Sanskrit, Germanic, and Slavic tongues.

But like Semitic, Aryan was later misused. Nineteenth-century racial theorists, especially in Germany, began using Aryan to describe a supposed superior “white” race. The contrast between Aryan and Semitic peoples became a false racial divide, built entirely on prejudice rather than science.

The Invention of “Antisemitism”

In 1879, the German political writer Wilhelm Marr gave racial antisemitism its modern name. Seeking a term that sounded secular and scientific – less rooted in religion and more in ideology – he popularised Antisemitismus to describe hostility toward Jews as a political stance. Marr used “Semite” not in its linguistic sense, but as a racialised synonym for “Jew,” repurposing an old philological label into a tool of hate.

This usage had nothing to do with Arabs or other speakers of Semitic languages. Marr’s framing excluded them entirely, narrowing “Semite” to mean Jew and recasting antisemitism as a rational, even patriotic, response to what he saw as Jewish influence in German society.

Some historians, including Alex Bein, note that the term antisemitism appeared earlier. For example, the Jewish scholar Moritz Steinschneider used it in the 1860s while attacking Ernest Renan’s racial theories, especially his glorification of “Aryan” superiority. Steinschneider’s usage, however, was satirical and ironic rather than programmatic.

Still, it was Marr who gave the term political traction and embedded it in public discourse. His pamphlets and polemics helped normalise antisemitism as a political identity, laying rhetorical groundwork for movements that would later weaponise it on a far larger scale.

Modern Understanding

So while Semitic began as a mix of biblical story and language study, the idea of a “Semitic people” slowly faded away. What remained was the language label – until Marr and others misappropriated the term to categorise Jews.

That’s why the phrase “Arabs are Semites too” misses the point. Linguistically, yes, Arabic is a Semitic language. But historically, antisemitism was never about language. It was, and still is, a word for hatred of Jews.

Why the Spelling Matters

Today, you’ll sometimes see people write anti-Semitic with a hyphen, but many historians and Jewish organisations prefer antisemitic as a single word. Dropping the hyphen helps remove the mistaken idea that there is such a thing as “Semitism” that one could oppose.

It keeps the focus on what the term has always truly meant: a specific hostility toward Jews – not a vague opposition to a defunct racial classification.

Few words provoke such instant emotion as “apartheid.” It evokes whites-only benches, segregated buses, and a moral struggle that defined a generation.

That’s why it’s been borrowed and thrown at Israel; it carries ready-made outrage. But when you look closely at what apartheid really meant, what Israel actually is, and who is using the term today, the comparison does not hold up.

The Birth of a Slogan

The claim of Israeli apartheid began as a political talking point. South African Prime Minister Hendrik Verwoerd first made the comparison in 1961. A few years later, Arab groups such as the PLO echoed it. Through the 1970s and 1980s, a few academics and activists repeated the term, but it gained little traction until the 1990s, when the Oslo process and, later, the security barrier became easy targets for loose analogies.

The idea entered mainstream debate after the 2001 Durban Conference – a UN anti‑racism summit in South Africa where NGOs revived the old “Zionism equals racism” slogan and called for Israel’s isolation. Former US President Jimmy Carter’s 2006 book Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid then helped to normalise the phrase, though he limited its use to Gaza and the West Bank.

Each step pushed the word further from its original meaning. These groups didn’t uncover apartheid, they redefined it.

What Apartheid Really Was

Under South Africa’s regime, race wasn’t just social – it was law. Skin colour dictated where you could live, who you could marry, which hospital or school you could attend, even which bench you could sit on. It was racial domination inside one sovereign state, justified by the idea of “separate development.” One race ruled; the others obeyed.

That’s apartheid. That’s what the word means.

Israel, by contrast, is a multi-ethnic democracy. Around 20% of its citizens are Arab. They vote, form political parties, sit in parliament, and work as doctors, judges, professors, and diplomats.

Arab ministers have served in government, and Arab-led parties have even joined governing coalitions. Arabs serve in the Israeli military, police, diplomatic corps, and judiciary. They work as doctors, judges, professors, and business leaders.

The law doesn’t segregate citizens by race, religion, or ethnicity; civil rights apply equally to all citizens, and participation extends across every sector of national life.

The NGO Redefinition Trick

Despite this, major NGOs such as Human Rights Watch (HRW) and Amnesty International continue to use the apartheid label, illustrating how these NGOs manipulate language to advance a political narrative rather than describe the realities of a functioning democracy.

NGOs make the accusation stick by stretching definitions. Instead of apartheid meaning race-based domination within one state, they broaden it to any system where one group has more control than another. That could describe almost any country with internal disputes.

Amnesty’s 2022 report even merged Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza into one state. That’s fiction; the Palestinian Authority governs most of the West Bank under the Oslo Accords, while Gaza is ruled (for now) by Hamas, an Islamist terrorist group that calls for Israel’s destruction and bans Jews entirely.

You can’t accuse Israel of oppressing people it doesn’t govern.

Security, Not Supremacy

What critics call “segregation” is actually security. The barrier and checkpoints in the disputed territories weren’t built to separate people by ethnicity, but to stop suicide bombings – before they existed, buses and cafés were exploding weekly in terrorist incidents.

After construction, attacks dropped by more than 90%. They are defence measures, not racial ones. When violence eases, restrictions ease; when it returns, they tighten. It’s not ideology, it’s survival.

Administrative Detention and Unequal Systems

Critics highlight administrative detention and dual legal systems as proof of apartheid. The reality is more complex and grounded in international law. Under the Fourth Geneva Convention, an occupying power may apply military law in areas under its control until a final peace deal is reached.

Israeli Arabs are citizens under civil law. Palestinian Arabs in the West Bank are dealt with under military law because the area remains under jurisdiction pending an agreement. The distinction is legal and territorial – not racial.

UN agencies like UNRWA, created to manage Palestinian refugees, have prolonged this limbo. By maintaining refugee status for generations instead of promoting resettlement or integration, they’ve frozen the conflict and kept temporary systems alive.

A Diplomatic Limbo

Some legal scholars argue that under Uti Possidetis Juris, Israel inherited sovereignty from the British Mandate. While this is a valid legal argument, when Israel joined the United Nations in 1949, it accepted recognition within the armistice boundaries – provisional lines awaiting a final peace deal.

After the 1967 Six‑Day War, Israel agreed to treat areas beyond those lines as occupied rather than sovereign in order to preserve diplomatic flexibility. This created a legal grey zone: Palestinians are not Israeli citizens but live under Israeli military law in line with the Fourth Geneva Convention, while Israeli settlers remain under civil law.

The outcome is a population caught between definitions – neither fully integrated nor fully independent. Decades of failed negotiations have cemented this arrangement, feeding confusion and creating space for lazy slogans and accusations of “apartheid.”

The Illusion of Apartheid

What began as a diplomatic compromise now creates the illusion of racial division.

From a distance, the West Bank can look like South Africa – two peoples, two systems – but the resemblance is misleading. Apartheid was a deliberate racial doctrine to keep one race ruling another within a single state.

Today’s situation is a separate administration born of stalled peace, unresolved borders, and temporary security law. The divide stems from citizenship and jurisdiction, not ethnicity.

The longer the stalemate continues, the more it appears like apartheid to outsiders – but it remains an illusion born of frozen diplomacy, not racial separation.

The Forgotten Side

This is where the argument moves from legality to morality – from treaties and laws to the real human costs and double standards that define the debate.

This contrast matters because it highlights how Israel, often singled out unfairly, is held to a higher standard even as it remains the only democracy in the region. It shows how language and perception can obscure who is truly excluded and why.

While Israel is called an apartheid state, Jews are banned or expelled from most surrounding territories. Nearly a million Jews were driven from Arab countries after 1948 – their homes seized and synagogues destroyed. Gaza has been Judenrein since 2005. Israel withdrew every soldier and settler; within days, synagogues were burned.

No Jew can enter. That’s not even apartheid; it’s exclusion.

Even in Jerusalem, Jews face restrictions. The Temple Mount, Judaism’s holiest site, is under Islamic Waqf control. Jews are forbidden to pray there, while Muslims pray freely at al‑Aqsa. It’s the only country where the majority faith cannot pray at its own holiest site, yet Israel is the one accused of apartheid.

The Palestinian Authority’s Mirror Image

Under the Palestinian Authority, Jews cannot live or buy land in its areas. In some cases selling land to a Jew can even mean execution. Palestinians under the PA have no elections, limited free speech, and no independent judiciary. Journalists are even jailed for criticising Mahmoud Abbas.

Amnesty and HRW rarely mention this, because it was never about human rights; it was always about politics.

A Political Weapon

The apartheid label isn’t a description, it’s a tactic. It reframes a complex territorial dispute as a moral crusade. Once Israel is branded an apartheid state, its existence becomes the crime. Boycotts and sanctions follow, debate dies, and reality is replaced by ideology.

It also cheapens history; it turns the suffering of black South Africans into metaphor, stripping it of meaning. Comparing the two doesn’t elevate Palestinians – it diminishes those who endured true racial tyranny.

The Wider Picture

Israel isn’t perfect. No democracy under constant threat is. But singling it out while ignoring discrimination across the region and beyond is absurd.

• In Iran, Baháʼís are denied education.

• In Saudi Arabia, non‑Muslims can’t become citizens.

• In Malaysia, ethnic Malays receive preference over Chinese and Indian minorities.

• In China, Uyghur Muslims face state surveillance and detention.

• In Gaza, being gay can mean ten years in prison.

Meanwhile, in Israel, Arab doctors treat Jewish patients and Arab judges sentence Jewish defendants. That’s coexistence under pressure – not apartheid.

Words Matter

If apartheid still means what it used to, Israel isn’t guilty of it. If it now just means power imbalance or disputed borders, then half the world fits the bill – from Cyprus to Kashmir.

This isn’t propaganda, this is accuracy. When powerful organisations twist language for politics, they don’t bring peace closer – they push it further away.

The people who pay for that aren’t activists or diplomats but ordinary people trapped in a conflict that’s hard enough without being rewritten.

Words matter. Especially this one.

Walk through Spitalfields, on the edge of London’s East End, and you might find an old brick building bearing the carved inscription Soup Kitchen for the Jewish Poor.

The kitchen was first established in nearby Leman Street in 1854, moving several times before finally settling in Brune Street (formerly Butler Street) in 1902. There, it served free meals to waves of impoverished Jewish immigrants fleeing pogroms and persecution in Eastern Europe. Tailors, cobblers, hawkers, and widows queued outside, shivering in the London fog and clutching themselves against the cold.

That image – poverty, not power – was the reality for most Jews in Europe. Yet somehow, the opposite myth took hold: that Jews were rich, influential, and secretly in control.

To understand how that legend began, we have to look back centuries earlier – to a time when money itself carried moral weight and faith dictated the limits of finance.

The Christian Ban on Usury

In medieval Europe, the Catholic Church forbade Christians from lending money at interest. Usury – profiting from loans – was considered a sin, and that left a vacuum in an economy that still needed credit to function. Jews, excluded from most other trades, were often permitted (or forced) by rulers to fill that role.

They became moneylenders not out of greed but survival. They couldn’t own land, join guilds, or enter many professions. Yet they could lend, and for kings and nobles who needed cash to fund wars or pay debts, Jews were convenient creditors – and even more convenient scapegoats when repayments became politically awkward.

The Birth of a Stereotype

When debtors couldn’t repay their loans, resentment turned religious. The “Jewish usurer” became a symbol of greed and exploitation, while the Christian debtor was recast as a victim. Church sermons, art, and later literature – from Chaucer to Shakespeare – reinforced the image. Shylock became the eternal figure of the Jewish money-man: clever, cold, and cruel.

In truth, Jewish moneylenders were rarely rich. Many lived under constant threat of persecution, extortion, or expulsion. The same rulers who tolerated them for profit expelled them when it became politically useful – England in 1290, France in 1306, Spain in 1492.

The Poverty Most People Forgot

Fast forward to the 19th century. Jewish emancipation opened some doors, but most Jews still lived poor. The East End of London, Warsaw, Odessa – all were filled with Jewish immigrants escaping pogroms and persecution. They worked as tailors, cobblers, street traders. Their lives were hard, their homes overcrowded, their prospects limited.

Yet those same decades saw the rise of a handful of extraordinary Jewish banking families – the Rothschilds, Montefiores, Oppenheims. Their success became legend, and for antisemites that was all the “evidence” needed to prove a global cabal. Never mind that 99 per cent of Jews had no money, no power and no safety.

The Forgery That Fed the Fantasy

At the turn of the 20th century, that fantasy found its scripture. In 1903, a forged text called The Protocols of the Elders of Zion started to be circulated. It claimed to expose a Jewish plot to dominate the world – banks, newspapers, governments. Every word was false, plagiarised from a 19th-century French political satire. But the forgery caught fire. It spread across Europe and America, republished by antisemites and conspiracy theorists alike, from Tsarist propagandists to Henry Ford.

The Protocols turned old prejudice into a global doctrine; the myth of Jewish wealth became the myth of Jewish power.

Selective Perception

Every society has its rich and its poor. Nobody assumes all Italians control fashion because of Gucci, or that all Americans own tech companies because of Musk or Bezos. But with Jews, the logic is inverted: the success of a few is projected onto the whole. The result is a caricature of Jewish power that’s endured for centuries.

It’s the same pattern repeated today in conspiracy culture. “Globalists,” “financial elites,” “shadowy networks” – the old tropes dressed in modern language. Scratch beneath the surface, and the targets are often the same: Jews, or people perceived as Jewish.

The Irony of Wealth

The irony is brutal. For centuries, Jews were denied land, professions, and citizenship – then hated for finding success in the few areas left open to them. When they were poor, they were despised; when they prospered, they were feared.

The idea of Jewish wealth says less about Jews than about those who need someone to blame. It’s a mirror – reflecting the anxieties of each age: feudal debt, industrial capitalism, globalisation, or modern inequality.

Meanwhile, the Soup Kitchen for the Jewish Poor still stands in Spitalfields, a relic of the truth. The myth of Jewish wealth was always a projection – the story a society tells when it needs someone to blame.

Maybe you’ve seen the comment:

“Jews have been expelled from 109 countries. Think about that.”

It sounds like some kind of proof, doesn’t it? The same thing happened over a hundred times, so maybe there’s a pattern. Maybe there’s something they did. That’s the quiet implication, repeated endlessly in far-right and conspiracy spaces.

Except it’s complete rubbish. There is no list. There is no data. There is no historian, no source, no document in any archive that records “109 countries.”

The number is made up.

Where the Number Came From

The “109” claim started on extremist forums years ago. People wanted a neat number that made antisemitism sound like logic instead of hate. Someone even faked a Snopes screenshot to make it look verified. Reuters later exposed it as a forgery.

Since then it’s turned up everywhere – in comment sections, on TikTok, in Telegram groups, and on those dodgy “history” accounts that also think the moon landing was filmed in a shed.

They post long lists that look impressive until you read them. They include places that weren’t even countries, like duchies, church territories and towns. They count the same country several times. They count Holocaust deportations as expulsions, collapsing genocide into the same category as medieval edicts. Some versions even mix a 13th-century royal decree in England with industrialised murder in Nazi-occupied Poland, as if they were the same event.

The Numbers Keep Growing

Other versions of the claim go even further, for example a so-called “list of 1,030 Jewish expulsions.” It sounds impressive until you look closely: the figure comes from a self-published compilation that also lumps together everything from major state edicts to small-town bans, forced conversions, massacres, uprisings, and even multiple events sanctioned by the same authority – sometimes listed more than once – along with mythological stories.

Again, no historian or peer-reviewed work recognises this number – it’s the same gimmick as the “109 countries” claim, just inflated to sound more convincing.

It’s not history. It’s a spreadsheet of hate.

What Really Happened

Yes, Jews were expelled from some countries – that part is true. But the actual number is a fraction of 109, and in every case it had its own specific reason, usually involving money, religion or politics. There was no universal Jewish crime.

Take England. In 1290, King Edward I expelled the Jews because he owed them money and the Church didn’t like them lending it. France did something similar several times, kicking Jews out, then inviting them back when the treasury ran dry. Spain’s 1492 expulsion came after the Inquisition demanded religious purity. Portugal followed, then promptly forced conversions instead of letting people leave.

It was a pattern of exploitation: use, blame, expel, repeat. When kings needed loans, Jews were welcome. When debts piled up, they became scapegoats.

The same story played out in city after city – not 109 countries, but a handful of powerful rulers using Jewish communities as political pawns.

Look at Who Did the Expelling

Here’s what the “109 countries” crowd never mention: who was doing the expelling.
When you actually list the names, the pattern is clear – not of Jewish wrongdoing, but of tyrants, theocrats and totalitarians.

It wasn’t gentle democracies kicking Jews out. It was kings, inquisitors, czars and dictators.

• Hitler – organised the Holocaust. Not a moral authority.

• Stalin – deported entire Jewish populations and executed Yiddish writers.

• Medieval monarchs – bankrupted, paranoid, heavily influenced by religious zealots.

• The Inquisition – burned “heretics” and “witches” alongside Jews.

• The Church – excommunicated scientists, banned books, and purged anything it feared.

• Hadrian – suppressed the Bar Kokhba revolt, banned Jews from Jerusalem, demolished the city, and renamed Judea as 'Syria Palaestina'.

If anything, the “pattern” shows that Jews were targeted by the worst people in history.

So if Hitler and Stalin are on the same list of “people who expelled Jews,” what does that tell you?

It tells you the list is a record of who the monsters were, not of what Jews supposedly did wrong.

And It Didn’t Stop in Europe

The expulsions and persecutions didn’t end with medieval kings or European tyrants. After Israel’s creation in 1948, a new wave of antisemitic persecution swept through the Middle East and North Africa. Around 850,000 Jews fled or were driven out of Arab and Muslim countries.

In many cases, governments stripped Jews of citizenship, confiscated their property and land, or allowed mobs to do the job for them. Some were given only days to leave.

• Iraq – In 1950 the Denaturalisation Act forced Jews to renounce citizenship; 120,000 fled and their property was seized.

• Egypt – After 1948 and again in 1956, Jews were expelled or arrested and pressured to leave.

• Libya – Pogroms in 1945 and 1948 killed hundreds; by 1967 the remaining Jews were expelled.

• Syria and Lebanon – Jews faced arrests, restrictions, and intimidation until almost all had fled.

• Yemen – Violence and harassment led to the mass airlift known as Operation Magic Carpet.

• Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria – No single decree, but steady state hostility and mob violence pushed most Jews to leave.

This was the last great wave of Jewish displacement, and the people who push the “109 countries” line – many of whom also spread anti‑Muslim hate – never mention any of it.

Why It Stuck

The “109” myth survives because it sounds mathematical. It pretends to be neutral: “I’m not antisemitic, I’m just pointing out a pattern.” But that’s the trick; it turns persecution into proof of guilt.

By that logic, the more Jews were attacked, the more it proves they deserved it. It’s circular reasoning, and it’s sick.

History tells a different story. Jews were convenient targets in societies looking for someone to blame when crops failed, when plagues hit, when kings were broke. Economists have even tracked how antisemitic violence spiked after economic crashes.

That’s not evidence of guilt. It’s evidence of scapegoating.

The Giveaways

You can spot a “109 countries” post a mile off. Look for these signs:

• It never cites an actual historian.

• It treats medieval Europe like a map of modern nations.

• It counts the same kingdom three times.

• It lists “expulsions” that were actually forced conversions.

• It comes with some smug tagline like “Makes you think…”

It doesn’t make you think. It makes you lazy.

The Truth

Here’s the truth that doesn’t fit into a meme:

Jews have lived in almost every civilisation for over 3,000 years, and from some of those they were expelled, persecuted, invited back, and expelled again – not because of what they did, but because of what others needed or because of who they were.

Sometimes that was money. Sometimes religion. Sometimes politics. Always the same pattern: blame the Jews, solve nothing.

The “109 countries” lie survives because it gives modern antisemites a number to hide behind. But you can’t turn propaganda into proof just by putting it in a list.

If Jews had really been expelled from 109 countries, the people making that claim would be able to name them.

They can’t. Because they don’t exist.

A short video has recently resurfaced on social media.

In it, an Italian woman knocks on the door of a home in Bath, England, politely explaining that the Romans used to live there, so she’s decided to reclaim it for Italy. The man answering the door is understandably bewildered as she insists she has ancestral rights to the house. The video ends darkly – she finally shoots him before she starts to move in, pushing the irony a little beyond humour.

It’s meant to be satire, of course – a jab at Israel’s ancestral claim to the land, and a little lie about the return, using humour to imply absurdity.

But there’s one small problem: Roman culture didn’t originate in Bath.

The Romans didn’t emerge from Somerset’s hot springs or carve out empire from a small settlement by the Avon. They arrived as conquerors – foreign, imperial, temporary. Their architecture may have left a footprint, but their civilisation didn’t grow out of British soil.

Bath was occupied, not born Roman.

Judea was also occupied by the Romans.

However, it was also the cradle of Jewish identity, culture, and religion. Long before Rome existed, the kingdoms of Israel and Judah stood in that very land. Jerusalem wasn’t an exotic colonial project – it was home. So when people claim that the modern Jewish connection to Israel is like the Romans reclaiming Britain, they’re comparing invaders to natives, empire to homeland.

It’s an analogy that collapses under its own irony.

Rome in Britain – A Visitor’s Legacy

Roman Britain was a four-century episode in a story that wasn’t Britain’s.
The legions landed in 43 CE, conquered, built roads and baths, and left.
Their imprint was physical, not cultural – Latin faded, pagan temples crumbled, and native life resumed once they withdrew.

No one seriously argues that Britain “belongs” to Italy because of a few stone ruins and a Latin inscription. If anything, Roman occupation is remembered as just that occupation.

Rome in Judea – A War Against Identity

Judea’s experience under Rome was far bloodier.

After years of tension, Jewish revolts erupted in 66 CE and again in 132 CE.

The Roman response was catastrophic: Jerusalem was razed, the Temple destroyed, and survivors sold into slavery and shipped back to Rome. Emperor Hadrian then renamed the province Syria Palaestina in an attempt to erase Jewish presence entirely.

In other words, Rome didn’t just conquer Judea – it tried to delete it.

So when a satirical sketch equates Rome’s occupation of Bath with the Jewish return to Israel, it unintentionally flips history upside down.

The Romans expelled Jews from their land.

Jews didn’t build an empire or seek new territories – they clung to memory, tradition, and prayer for two thousand years, facing exile, persecution, and genocide – before re-establishing sovereignty in the place that defined them.

The Irony of the Analogy

If we’re being consistent, the “Italian woman reclaiming Bath” scenario would actually make Italy the coloniser, not the indigenous people. The Jewish equivalent would be more like Romans returning to Rome after centuries of exile – reclaiming what was theirs, not what they once occupied by force.

The deeper irony is that the very empire this video references – Rome – was the one that destroyed Jewish autonomy and scattered its people.

What the Romans “did for Judea” wasn’t civilisation or infrastructure. It was devastation.

So, what Have the Romans Ever Done for Judea?

Let’s answer the question.

They destroyed the Temple.
They massacred, expelled and enslaved the population.
They erased the name.
They spread centuries of exile.

So perhaps the more fitting modern comparison isn’t Romans in Bath – it’s the descendants of exiles returning to their ancestral home after the empire that destroyed them finally fell.

The Lesson from History

History is full of layers, contradictions, and inherited myths.

Sometimes the joke reveals more about the joker than the target.

Because if the Romans had treated Britain the way they treated Judea, Bath wouldn’t have any houses left to reclaim.

Quoting is easy. Thinking is hard.

That’s how Zionism, one of the most complex political movements of the 20th century, got reduced to a handful of cherry-picked soundbites. A sentence from Ben-Gurion here, a diary entry from Herzl there — stripped of context, weaponised for outrage, and recycled endlessly in activist circles and online echo chambers.

But Zionism wasn’t a monolith. It wasn’t a conspiracy. It was a messy, evolving response to a crisis; a movement of thinkers, dreamers, pragmatists, and refugees who disagreed on almost everything: where to go, how to get there, and what to do once they arrived.

To pretend that a handful of quotes defines a movement is not just lazy — it’s dishonest.

So let’s look at the most viral, most abused lines attributed to Zionist pioneers.

What did they actually say? What did they mean? And how did their words get twisted into slogans that tell us more about the accuser than the accused?

David Ben-Gurion

“We must expel the Arabs and take their place.”

This line purportedly comes from a 1937 private letter to his son Amos, often waved around as proof of a master plan for ethnic cleansing. It was paraphrased by the historian Ilan Pappé in his book “The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine” but has been debunked by numerous scholars, who note that the quote does not appear in the original handwritten manuscript and contradicts the surrounding context.

The Hebrew manuscript additionally shows that words in the letter were scribbled out and overwritten; scholars disagree about what was changed and whether those edits came from Ben-Gurion himself.

Below is a published translation (Institute for Palestine Studies) of a passage that reflects the surrounding context:

“All of our ambitions are built on the assumption that has proven true throughout all of our activities in the land — that there is enough room for us and for the Arabs in the land. And if we will have to use force, not for the sake of evicting the Arabs of the Negev or Transjordan, but rather in order to secure the right that belongs to us to settle there, force will be available to us.”

The letter was written in the shadow of the British Peel Commission, which had just proposed partition after years of failed coexistence and violent uprisings. Like others, Ben Gurion wrestled with whether separation — and by extension, population transfer — could offer a path to peace.

It was an idea born from despair, not ambition.

By 1948, his tone had shifted. Reading Israel’s Declaration of Independence aloud, he invited all residents — Jewish and Arab alike — to help build the new state “on the basis of full and equal citizenship.” That wasn’t rhetoric. It was policy.

The quote survives. The context rarely does.

David Ben-Gurion

“If I knew that it was possible to save all the children of Germany by transporting them to England, and only half by transferring them to the Land of Israel, I would choose the latter, for before us lies not only the numbers of these children but the historical reckoning of the people of Israel.”

This one often appears online as proof that Ben Gurion valued ideology over human life; that he would rather half the Jewish children of Germany die than have them rescued anywhere but in Palestine.

But the story is more complex than that.

In December 1938, at the height of the refugee crisis following Kristallnacht, Ben Gurion was speaking to the Mapai Central Committee about the dilemma of rescue versus national purpose.

It sounds heartless, but it wasn’t a statement of preference for death; it was the anguish of a man trying to reconcile two conflicting imperatives: saving Jews now versus ensuring that Jews would never again be refugees.

He believed that without a national home, Jewish life would remain perpetually endangered, generation after generation. That was the “historical reckoning” he spoke of.

It’s fair to criticise his logic, and it’s also fair to see it as a tragic moral equation born of despair, not cruelty. To use it as proof of indifference is to strip away the fear, urgency and context that made it human.

Theodor Herzl

“We shall spirit the penniless population across the border.”

This is one of the most famous — and most abused — lines. The diary entry, from 1895, refers to “penniless population”, not “Arab population”, and was part of Herzl’s musings about how to manage land ownership in any prospective Jewish state.

At that point, Herzl was still exploring where such a homeland could even be. Palestine was his preference, but he also entertained alternatives in Argentina or East Africa.

His language sounds harsh today, but the intent was bureaucratic, not genocidal — an early sketch of how poor tenants might be resettled or compensated. It never became policy.

Ironically, Herzl himself never set foot in Palestine, and his movement’s earliest followers were already farming there decades before his rise. Whatever else he imagined, Eretz Israel was never far from the core of Zionist thought.

Ze’ev Jabotinsky

“Zionist colonisation must proceed against the wishes of the native population.”

This one’s genuine — but only in half.

In his 1923 essay The Iron Wall, Jabotinsky wrote that Jewish self-defence and permanence would only be accepted by Arabs after they saw that the Jewish community could not be destroyed. It was a realist’s argument for security, not a moral defence of oppression.

Later in the essay, he concluded:

“And when that happens, I am convinced that we Jews will be found ready to give them satisfactory guarantees, so that both peoples can live together in peace, like good neighbours.”

Jabotinsky’s point was that strength had to precede peace, not replace it.

But activists rarely quote that part. The first line fits better on a protest banner.

Menachem Begin

“The Palestinians are beasts walking on two legs.”

This line has become one of the most viral anti-Zionist memes. Supposedly, Begin said this in 1982. The problem is, he didn’t.

The phrase comes from a New Statesman article by journalist Amnon Kapeliouk titled “Begin and the Beasts.” He claimed Begin used those words in a Knesset speech. But when the Knesset record was later reviewed, the line didn’t appear. What Begin actually said, during a debate following terror attacks on Israeli children, was this:

“If the hand of any two-footed animal is raised against them, that hand will be cut off.”

The language was brutal, yes — but he was referring to terrorists who had attacked civilians, not to Palestinians in general. The change from “two-footed animals” to “beasts walking on two legs” wasn’t a translation, it was an embellishment that turned a statement of vengeance into a racist doctrine.

Begin’s rhetoric could be fierce, but he wasn’t a biological supremacist. In other speeches he spoke about Arabs as partners in peace and praised those who chose coexistence.

This quote survived because it sounded monstrous. The real line was simply vengeful, and, sadly, very human.

Golda Meir

“There were no Palestinians.”

Another favourite. Meir did say it — in 1969 — but her meaning was political, not existential.

She was commenting on national identity, arguing that before the creation of Israel, there was no distinct Palestinian nationality separate from broader Arab identity.

That’s not the same as denying a people’s existence. Palestinian national identity, as many historians note, developed more sharply in the mid-20th century — largely in response to Zionism — but the population itself was ethnically Arab, tied by language, culture, and family networks across the broader Levant.

She later said explicitly, “Palestinians are not our enemies; the enemy is those who attack us.”

That sentence, somehow, didn’t go viral.

Chaim Weizmann

“A land without a people for a people without a land.”

By the time Weizmann entered the debate decades later, the phrase was already in circulation. First used by 19th‑century British Christian Zionists such as Alexander Keith and later popularised by William Blackstone, it was a poetic appeal for biblical restoration — not a denial of Arab life.

In 1919, Weizmann echoed the sentiment rhetorically, describing Zionism as a union of “a people without a country” and “a country without a people.” His tone was diplomatic, not dismissive. He also stressed that the land’s owners — the Ottoman authorities — had to be persuaded that the partnership would benefit them. It was a flourish of persuasion, not a doctrine of denial.

The phrase was never policy, nor did it represent the broader Zionist view. Early leaders, including Weizmann, recognised that Arabs lived in the land and often spoke of coexistence and mutual development. The line survived because it captured a hopeful idea — not because it described reality.

Albert Einstein

“It would be my greatest sadness to see Zionists do to Arabs what Nazis did to Jews.”

He never said it.

No letter, diary or speech contains those words. The line appeared decades later in activist pamphlets, usually without citation. In reality, Einstein’s public stance was mixed: he supported a Jewish homeland, but feared the dangers of nationalism.
He signed Israel’s Declaration of Independence invitation, contributed to the Hebrew University, and was even offered the presidency of Israel in 1952.

His concern was always morality, not legitimacy.

The Lesson

Pulling isolated quotes from Zionist history is like reading one line from Macbeth and claiming it explains all of English literature.

Context matters. So does translation. So does intent.

You can always find a quote that flatters your bias. But before you share it, ask yourself who benefits from the version being circulated, what gets lost when a movement is reduced to a slogan — and whether the quote is even real.

Ben Gurion debated transfer, as did the British and the Arabs. Jabotinsky built walls, then offered partnership. Herzl worried about poverty while dreaming up a nation that didn’t yet exist.

If we let slogans replace scholarship, we risk becoming historically illiterate.

History isn’t a collage of memes. It’s a messy, unfinished argument between people trying—and often failing—to solve impossible problems.

If we want to understand it, we’ll need to read more than the quotes.

It’s the go-to accusation for anyone unwilling to believe that real people, from across the world, might support Israel out of conviction rather than conspiracy.

The term is modern, but the idea behind it is old, as old as the stereotype it draws from: that Jews never act as individuals, only as a coordinated collective. It’s a digital-age update of the “Jewish lobby” trope; less explicit, but equally poisonous.

What “Hasbara” actually means

The Hebrew word Hasbara (הסברה) roughly translates as explaining. It’s a term Israel uses for public diplomacy, the process of communicating its policies and defending its image abroad. Every democratic state does this.

Like other democracies with their own public diplomacy offices, such as Britain’s FCDO and America’s State Department, Israel has its equivalent – once referred to as the Hasbara Unit, later reorganised as the National Public Diplomacy Directorate under the Prime Minister’s Office, and more recently rebranded in part as Voices of Israel – a Foreign Ministry-led initiative for digital and international outreach.

This branch of government, for the most part, functioned like any communications department: publishing statements, providing information, correcting falsehoods, and responding to media narratives.

In the early Zionist movement, public messaging was sometimes called “propaganda,” but only in the older, neutral sense – the promotion of ideas or advocacy for a cause.

Over time, Hasbara replaced it, reflecting a shift from persuasion to explanation. The Hebrew word for propaganda is ta’amula (תעמולה), which has a much more negative connotation. Hasbara was chosen instead because it implied openness and dialogue rather than manipulation.

There’s nothing secret or sinister about it. “Hasbara” doesn’t mean propaganda in the way we use the term today; it means communication, and the difference is intent. Propaganda distorts; Hasbara explains.

Israel’s message may not always be perfect, but the goal is transparency; to show, not to hide.

The birth of the “bot”

When social media exploded, so did political tribalism. Suddenly, every argument had to be traced to a puppet-master. Russian trolls, Chinese bots or Zionist shills – they all fed a new culture of paranoia.

Pro-Israel voices, often articulate and well-informed, became targets. The assumption was that no ordinary person could possibly know so much, or care so deeply, unless they were paid to.

In 2001, a real initiative called Hasbara Fellowships, was launched by Aish HaTorah in partnership with Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is a non-governmental initiative that trains students for pro-Israel advocacy on campus; funded by private donors, it aims to counter antisemitism and misinformation in universities.

While the programme is open and legitimate, anti-Israel activists have sometimes pointed to it as evidence of a coordinated global network of “Hasbara agents.” In online spaces, the term “Hasbara bot” gained traction, and is now used to dismiss pro-Israel voices as scripted or inauthentic.

It was never evidence-based. It was an accusation born from disbelief – disbelief that Jews, Israelis, or allies might think for themselves.

Honesty and self-criticism

Israel’s public debate is fierce, often brutally so. Israeli journalists, NGOs and academics are among the first to criticise their government. Mistakes are acknowledged, debated, dissected - sometimes too loudly for Israel’s own good. No other country accused of “propaganda” has such an open and self-critical press. You can read in Haaretz, Yedioth Ahronoth, or The Times of Israel arguments that would be considered treasonous in most of the region.

When Israel errs - in policy, war or diplomacy – Israelis themselves are the first to say so. That isn’t spin; it’s accountability, and it’s precisely what Hasbara tries to communicate: that Israel, like any democracy, argues with itself constantly because it can.

Real Bot Networks

Although it’s widely known that states and private groups deploy bots for influence, the real problem is the blanket assumption about who the bots actually are. These campaigns are often large and state-directed, designed to distort rather than debate. Israel’s communication, by contrast, remains open and accountable, yet genuine voices defending it still get labelled as bots.

While some outlets, such as Al Jazeera, have alleged Israeli-linked bot activity, there is far stronger, verifiable evidence that large-scale, state-directed influence operations, often powered by bots, are driven by governments such as Russia, Iran, and China.

For example, the U.S. Department of Justice has confirmed Russian government-sponsored troll farms operating globally, while Reuters and independent researchers have documented Chinese “Spamouflage” networks and Iranian state-linked online manipulation.

Why the accusation sticks

Calling someone a Hasbara bot is an easy way to end a debate or save the accuser from having to engage with facts. It also dehumanises the speaker, and if a Jewish or Israeli person – or ally – can be dismissed as a “bot,” then their lived experience, knowledge and history don’t count.

It’s not just lazy; it’s dehumanising.

The irony is that the loudest users of the term often belong to movements that run their own coordinated campaigns, distributing hashtags and pre-written posts en masse. Yet they imagine Israeli advocacy as the only orchestrated voice online.

Why Hasbara matters

Hasbara exists because disinformation spreads. Because when Israel is falsely accused of apartheid, genocide, or colonialism, someone has to explain the reality, and an “explanation” is precisely what Hasbara gives.

It isn’t about excusing every mistake; it’s about context. It’s about saying: yes, we have problems, but no, we’re not the caricature you’ve built. It’s about defending the right of a small, pluralistic, embattled democracy to exist without being smeared into oblivion by those who have never lived a day under rocket fire.

In the end

The people labelled as “Hasbara bots” are almost always real: teachers, students, journalists, survivors, Israelis, Jews, and others who refuse to be silent. If defending a country, a people, or the truth makes you a “bot,” then maybe it’s the accuser who’s running on autopilot.
